Eastern Europe Plans

One of the best parts about studying abroad in Europe is how easy it is to travel from country to country. Unfortunately, Croatia is more expensive to travel to and from than a lot of the other countries that have study abroad programs. However, I have always loved traveling and the location will not stop me from doing so! Over the past few weeks I have been researching different countries that I want to visit as well as destinations in Croatia that I want to visit. In my last blog post I wrote about all of the destinations in Croatia that I want to visit, so now I will be talking about all of the places outside of the country I hope to visit.

This map of Europe highlights the Eastern European countries I looked into visiting.

Because there are so many countries I want to visit, this post is going to be about the Eastern European countries I am hoping to visit during my stay. The first country that caught my eye while I was researching places to visit in Eastern Europe was a country I had never even heard of, Montenegro. The beautiful country is filled with historical monuments, medieval homes, and some of the most gorgeous mountains.

Montenegro is a Balkan country filled with mountains, medieval villages and beaches along its Adriatic coastline.

The next destination I hope to go to is Budapest, Hungary. Not only is it one of the most historical cities in the world, has world famous hot springs, and it is also a food capital, and my favorite thing to do is eat. I want to visit the Great Synagogue, which is the largest in Europe, and visit the Hungarian Jewish Museum and the Holocaust memorial they have to honor my family members that were in the Holocaust. Being a German Jew has always been something I am really proud of and makes me unique. I will be going to a country that does not have a lot of Jews, so whenever I visit a country that has famous Synagogues or a Holocaust memorial, I plan on visiting.

Plans for Exploring Croatia

Part of the studying abroad process is meeting with students who have gone abroad in the past so that they can share their experiences as well as provide us with advice and more. One of things that I kept hearing from the students is how important it is to become a part of the culture in the country you are studying in. Especially with people who have studied abroad in Europe, it is easy to forget that part of the study abroad experience is getting to know the natives and integrating into the city. Due to the fact that it is so easy to travel from country to country in Europe, a lot of people do not spend enough weekends in their country to get the full experience. I definitely plan on traveling to other European countries, but, I want to get to know the Croatian culture and hopefully become a part of their community. To do this I plan on not only putting myself out there in the city I am staying in, but I also want to travel around the rest of the country in order to get the most out of my trip.

The Dubrovnik City walls are a world-renowned iconic symbol of the white stone beauty, which is why Dubrovnik is known as the Pearl of the Adriatic.

Croatia is known for its beautiful views, amazing beaches, rich history and more and I intend on taking full advantage of everything the country has to offer. I will be living in the most popular tourist destination in Croatia, Dubrovnik, so I plan on exploring the city throughout my entire time there. I will be staying right near one of the most popular travel destinations in the city, the old city walls, so I will be able to experience that in the colder months when I first get there, as well as during the warmer months towards the end of my trip. Another place I plan on visiting near Dubrovnik is Lokrum. Lokrum is a beautiful, forested Island that is a popular swimming spot.

There is a lot to see on Lokrum Island, which is just a 10 minute boat ride from Dubrovnik, including, nude beaches, peacocks, and even the Iron Throne for Game of Thrones fans.

One place I plan on visiting is Plitvice Lakes National Park located near the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the largest national park in Croatia and the pictures of it are enough of a reason to visit this gorgeous destination.

There are 16 different lakes in Plitvice National park and swimming in them is strictly forbidden.

I also plan on traveling to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. It is known for its culture, arts, music, and gastronomy. One thing the city is known for is the fact that it has the biggest number of museums per square meter. I used to hate all types of museums but for some reason I have loved almost every museum experience I have had in a European country and intend on visiting a few while I’m there, especially the famous Museum of Broken Relationships where they celebrate the loss of love in unusual ways.

A New Adventure

On February 3, 2017 I will be going out of my comfort zone and traveling halfway around the world to Dubrovnik, Croatia, where I will be studying abroad for about four months on my own. I have always known that I wanted to study abroad but I never knew where I wanted to go.

The Old City of Dubrovnik is surrounded by massive stone walls that were built-in the 16th century.

At the beginning of my junior year at Quinnipiac University I was researching all of the options I had without the slightest clue of which country I would. All I knew was that I wanted to study somewhere in the EU because I am a European citizen. I have been all over Western Europe and Germany, but have never traveled east of Germany, which is the country I have citizenship in. I started the process by looking at pictures of all of the places Quinnipiac had programs in and when I started looking into Croatia, I immediately fell in love. It is located between the western and eastern worlds, making it a perfect mix of different cultures. The beautiful country is filled with breathtaking views, lots of sun, fascinating history, charming architecture, great swimming and more. The university I will be studying at, Libertas International University, is located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. I get to learn in small classes with other international students while enjoying the stunning view of the ocean. How lucky am I?

Dubrovnik doubled as King’s Landing in the HBO serious Game of Thrones.

When people find out that I’m studying abroad in Croatia they always react the same way. “Why Croatia?”. I simply smile, pull up a picture of my future home and say, “Why not?”. Just looking through pictures usually is enough to explain why I chose Croatia as my destination. I usually further explain to them that I have always wanted to study abroad and I figured if I’m already doing something new, I might as well take an even bigger risk and study with a small group of people I have never met, because, why not?
